Evaluation & Therapy for Adults
 |
| An evaluation is done in a single 1 1/2 - 2 hour appointment. I do an evaluation of your speech skills before beginning any therapy. This allows us to get a baseline, or starting point, for measuring future progress. During the appointment I would like to find out what you want to achieve with speech therapy. If therapy is recommended, I would like to begin working with you during the last 30 minutes of the appointment. You will be given a written report with the information from the evaluation within a week. |
| Therapy for Adults |
There are many different types of therapy for stuttering. It is important to find a fluency specialist. A specialist is a speech-language pathologist who has been nationally certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) in the area of fluency and one who does a lot of fluency therapy. It is also important to determine what you want out of therapy and then find a therapist who can help you achieve your speech goals.
Once we have determined what approach or approaches are best for you we work in the therapy room practicing these. Once you are able to use the techniques we begin to have you use them in different situations. I also schedule a group session every month. This allows you to practice with other people who stutter. My clients tell me that the group sessions are invaluable to them. Besides, they are a lot of fun.
